The Kray twins made nearly £10,000 from the sale of the bonds. By any standards, this was a very good haul for forty-eight hours’ work, and Ron and Reg began to feel that bonds were a sure route to superwealth.

The following month, Leslie Payne was contacted by Gordon Andersen, an old associate from the Nigerian project. Andersen, a Canadian, knew Don Ceville and had already arranged for the transfer of the Mafia capo’s share of the previous bond sale. Now he had received word from Don Ceville that there were more bonds awaiting collection in Montreal, and that a date should be set up for another meeting.

Gordon Andersen was a man with an unusual business. He sold insurance to US military bases in Europe, specializing in cover against bomb damage. He was a fair man with a pleasant manner who lived in London, drove a big American car and also had his own light aircraft. He was someone whom Leslie Payne thought he could trust.

The batch of bearer bonds awaiting collection in Montreal came with a problem attached. They had no certification which meant that all the paperwork, apart from the bonds themselves, would have to be forged. This was tricky for Leslie Payne, who was no forger. He couldn’t even keep the books very well, which was why he employed Freddie Gore. Someone else would have to be involved. This meant setting up an urgent meeting with Ron and Reg Kray to discuss the problem.

The Krays had already realized that sooner or later they would need a friendly banker who could ‘handle’ paperwork like this for them. They had been given the name of someone who might be able to help, but meanwhile Ron suggested that they go ahead and arrange the meeting in Montreal anyway.

Leslie Payne assumed that he would again be the one to pick up the bonds, but the twins were beginning to wonder if they were becoming a little too dependent on him. They suggested that he should go, but accompanied by their brother, Charlie. This didn’t please Payne at all, as Charlie had been a witness to his humiliation in Nigeria, but he had to agree.

During the following week, the proposed Canadian party grew even larger. Ron and Reg decided to send a whole deputation to Montreal for in-depth discussions of potential Anglo-Canadian business ventures. As well as Leslie Payne and Charlie, the members chosen were Charlie Mitchell, a bookmaker and moneylender; Bobby McKew, a printer and one of Charlie’s closest friends; and Gordon Andersen himself. Charlie had become friendly with Gordon Andersen when they were in Nigeria together, so he was pleased to work with him again.

Leslie Payne’s main comfort was that at least someone else would have to carry the bearer bonds back through UK customs. He realized now that his future involvement with the bonds would be limited, as the twins were now definitely making arrangements to bring in someone with banking knowledge who could supply the necessary certificates and sell the bonds on to the European market.
